In
early 1982, the Alberta Economy was in the doldrums due to the after
effects of the reigning government's new National Energy Policy. Drilling
rigs were lined up at the border to go south for better jobs and money.
Starting a new company at that time was, to say the least, risky -
but when |
 |
you are young
and energetic and you believe in your abilities, it should stand
a fighting chance.
Peter
Vanderlinden and Burke Schumacher
pooled their resources and on May 1, 1982 they opened the doors.
Initially, they wanted to call it Cantec (Canadian Truck Equipment
Company), however, that name was already in use and they settled
for Caytec, the 'Y' being there for phonetic reasons and nobody
had that name! Relying on their previous experiences, they slowly
made progress through the '80's moving to larger premises on the
Blackfoot Trail in 1985 and, after acquiring Canspec Manufacturing
in 1990, to their present address in the Foothills Iindustrial Park
in Southeast Calgary.

Today,
the company occupies over 36,000 square feet, opened a branch in Edmonton
in 1997 with approximately 10,000 square feet and now has 50 people
on the payroll. In May 2005, the Edmonton
branch moved into a larger facility of over 22.000 sf.ft. on 178 St.
at 105 Ave., not far from the old facility, to support the increasing
amount of business. With more than twice the space we will be able
to serve our customers better!
